    Job Description
    Do you have camp, recreation, or education experience? Do you want to develop leadership skills over the summer while exploring nature, making crafts, and running games for elementary children at a vibrant recreation day camp in a beautiful wooded setting in Apalachin NY?  If so, you could be Waterman Conservation Education Center’s newest Camp Counselor!

    For 43 years, the Waterman Center has provided environmental education and outdoor recreation opportunities to the residents of Broome and Tioga counties.  Our mission is to promote environmental literacy while encouraging people to get outside and enjoy our natural areas.  
    For over 20 years we’ve offered a youth recreation day camp during the summer for children between the ages of 6 and 12 which includes games, hikes, crafts, and other activities.  An interest in nature is helpful, but not required for this position.  This position begins July 1st and ends August 2nd from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM but may possibly be extended until August 23rd.  Camp Counselors may have the opportunity to extend their hours by supervising early drop off/late pickup one hour prior and one hour after regular camp hours.  There will be 2-3 paid pre-camp meetings/trainings between the months of April and June.  Compensation to be discussed at interview.   
    Job Responsibilities:
    The camp counselor will directly supervise children and deliver programming for summer camp at the Waterman Center interpretive site on Hilton Rd. in Apalachin, NY.  Each week, camp counselors will work with the Camp Program Director and co-counselors to develop lesson plans and give feedback on the prior week.  Camp counselors will also be responsible to assist with daily set-up and clean-up, minor first aid, and other duties as assigned.   
    Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
    • 18 years or older.
    • Experience with summer camp preferred.
    • Teaching, care-giving, or supervisory experience with elementary children preferred.
    • Proven professionalism, punctuality, and responsibility.
    • Ability to pass a background check.
    • Ability to work outside under various weather conditions, hike over uneven terrain, and cope with insects.
    • Current (or ability to obtain) first aid and CPR certifications
